Artist's Statement

I photographed my great uncle, Andre Kolver, as part of a document of my family, descending from my great grandmother, Anna Kolver, when I attended my family reunion at the Gariep Dam in the Free State in May 2009. At the same time, I also began a project of shooting the physical landscapes where the Boer War concentration camps had been located in the surrounding areas. The two projects were always tied together, as my great grandmother had been in the camps at the young age of sixteen, losing her fifteen year old sister Elisebet in 1901. I chose these three pictures to unite these projects because they root my bloodline in the land and in the living legacy of a white Afrikaans family with a complex two hundred year history of living in South Africa. In loving memory of Andre Kolver.
