Artist's Statement

Representation: A Discourse examines how leaders are represented in the media and asks whether the contents of a politician’s statements are undermined by the reputation of the politician. The video juxtaposes the audio from a lecture by Professor Stuart Hall (Representation & the Media, October 2006) with the image of Julius Malema. This strangely surreal juxtaposition necessitates a rethinking of Julius Malema in a way that differs from his conventional representation within contemporary media, where he is lampooned for his idiosyncratic and controversial statements and we are constantly reminded of his lack of education. Malema qua Malema has become symbolic of the problems within representation, power and culture, all theoretical concepts that Professor Stuart Hall takes pains to interrogate in order to dismantle them.
