Artist's Statement

An imaginary scenario: A property developer goes bust. The reinforced concrete structure (with scaffolding) that he has constructed for a generic up market, multi-storey apartment block is abandoned. It is inhabited by squatters, each floor populated with makeshift structures and DIY engineering. Everything on the site is recycled and put to use in the spirit of ‘’n Boer maak ‘n plan’. The squatters are ingenious and resourceful in their methods of maximising the use of space. With meagre means, there is no room for wastage or unnecessary displays of vanity. Roof tops are planted with vegetables and trees, materials are left in their natural state to age gracefully or sometimes decorated in a lively way…

Artist's Biography

Born: Cape Town, 1968. Lives and works in Cape Town. Received his BArch from the University of Cape Town.
