This work is about being in a state of mind where one’s familiar perceptions and references are abandoned, producing melancholia. The waves in the background are a metaphor for life’s continuous trials and challenges that we should encounter openly and bravely. The number and depth of waves we pass through is a measure of age. The distant mountains echo the young man’s ‘out of body’ reality. The work is also a commentary on tenderness and care between men.
