Artist's Statement

This installation explores the intersection of memory, desire, architecture and the body, through a relationship set up between a viewing of a lattice swimming pool and a sculpture of an elongated lifeguard’s chair. Graphite is used in both cases to articulate the surfaces of these forms. The drawing is constructed by layering graphite pencil and powder on paper and the sculpture is surfaced with graphite powder. The double negative implied by the title troubles the notion of a safe hermetic space of leisure implied by the drawing of the lattice pool, as does the presence of the lifeguard surveillance tower, although apparently vacant. This work expresses a yearning for a space and time, past and future, where one’s sexuality can be expressed without any fear or scrutiny.
