Artist's Statement

Deterministic Chaos Drawing #023 (After R.Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Map) is part of a body of work which takes as a point of departure the art-making strategies of early conceptual artists such as Hans Haacke. This system-based work was produced by compulsively repeating the same linear configurations until the parameters were saturated. The work represents a form of linear progression towards a goal. However, as reflected in chaos theory, the goal cannot be predetermined as human error self-organises to reveal emergent forms. This drawing is fundamentally concerned with how we understand and interact with our world. It also serves as a recording of time, as the labour-intensive process took approximately sixty hours to complete.
