Artist's Statement

*Spier Contemporary 2010 Winner : Sicelo Ziqubu is the beneficiary of a residency at the Instituto Sacatar and the Sacatar Foundation on the Island of Itaparica, Bahia, Brazil

The work is an artist’s continuous humble endeavour to create environmental awareness among fellow humans. The male and female legs and feet reflect the fact that both man and woman can be inspired by small insects, like bees, to work together so as to accomplish a common goal. As both male and female bees work together to collect pollen from flowers as an essential ingredient to make honey in the beehive for the benefit of all, so men and women of all ages, sizes and creeds should work together to ensure the cleanliness of the surroundings by refraining from dumping waste and by converting it instead to lovely educational and informative art pieces.

Viewers are encouraged to look at, and learn from, small creatures like ants. Although usually disregarded by many, the ants’ marvelous work of taking ‘steps’ during favourable seasons to collect and preserve their food in order to sustain lives during adverse conditions in future unknown difficult times is exemplary to us. Humans should be motivated to come together to work tirelessly to restore beauty and ozone friendliness across our planet, earth.
