Welcome to the Spier Contemporary 2010 Exhibition’s virtual tour. This Exhibition is a project of the Africa Centre, a not-for-profit organisation based in South Africa.
Spier Contemporary is not a traditionally curated show, but one selected from an open call for submissions from artists throughout South Africa. This call to artists, attracted nearly 3000 entries in a diversity of mediums, from which, the curatorial team selected the 101 artists included in the Exhibition. One of the principle aims of the show is to reflect what contemporary artists have to say about the South African condition: our frailties, triumphs, expectations and trepidations. They speak to the past and imagine the future. These works serve up a plethora of perspectives and challenge their audience to think and feel differently.
In this virtual tour we will look at some of the work and begin to tease out some trends and themes that have emerged from this Exhibition.
